marma therapy

According to the Sushruta Samhita, a marma is the point of union of five important structures (ligaments, veins, muscles, bones and joints). There are then four channels (nerves, lymph, arteries and veins), which are responsible for transporting vayu (vital energy), pitta, kapha and blood. These elements come into contact with the marmas in order to maintain moisture in the five structures, contributing to their nutrition and health. There are 107 marma points spread throughout our body, distributed as follows: eleven in each leg, eleven in each arm, twelve in the chest and abdomen, fourteen in the spine and trina, and seven in the neck and head area. Marma points affect the physical health, the doshas, the chakras, the mental and spiritual plane, therefore they have a great influence on our whole being. Like traditional Chinese acupuncture, Ayurvedic medicine believes that when manipulated the marmas are able to alter our physical and mental energy, alter structural conditions in the body, remove blockages and increase the flow of energy.
